The Arizona Technology Council is the driving force behind making our state the fastest growing technology hub in the nation; connecting and empowering Arizona’s technology community. As Arizona's premier trade association for science and technology companies, the Council is recognized as having a diverse professional business community. Here's our interview with Steve Zylstra, President & CEO of the Arizona Technology Council, on how their organization practices selfless service.
Selfless service is loosely defined as a service that is performed without any expectation of something in return. How does your organization selflessly serve others?
The Arizona Technology Council has established a Foundation whose mission is to support Science, Engineering, Technology and Math (STEM) education by carrying out projects, programs, fairs, bowls and festivals that focus on STEM. The purpose of this support is to motivate students to seek educational and career paths in STEM-related fields. The Foundation also sponsors students who are pursuing careers in technology through scholarships and grants.
Do you have a specific example or a story of selfless service that has happened at your organization?
In the spirit of the traditional annual food drives the Arizona Technology Council is proud to host a holiday Science, Engineering, Technology and Math (STEM) Drive. We are collecting donations of STEM items, such as laptops, iPods, portable DVD players, digital cameras, study guides, E-books, calculators etc., to donate to the Phoenix Children's Hospital's “1 Darn Cool School,” a program designed to help prepare a child for return to the classroom after a long hospitalization.
What are your organization’s values, and how does the idea of selfless service fit into those values?
The Council values a diverse professional business community, whose members work collaboratively for positive technology transformation in Arizona through thoughtful leadership in mentoring, education, legislation and social action. Selfless service is inherent in our mission. We work tirelessly for our cause of advancing Arizona’s technology sector without regard for profit.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with the world about the idea of selfless service?
